walmart 12/26/2009

this morning at walmart, was in the way of a lady with a shopping cart but politely got out of the way. as she passed me and natalie she blurted out "chinese people are so rude!" for us to hear. at first i was laughing at her remark thinking that she was the rude one. but i also felt a little hurt and wanted to throw something at her. but then i realized that my action would reinforce her statement. thinking about this through the day, i'm not sure how to feel about racism. it's just been so long since something like this has been aimed at me.

Memorial Day 2009

Had a really good, relaxing day with Natalie, my wife.
Went to Academy of Sciences. Favorite exhibits: African Exhibit, Baobab tree, and Tiger Shark. Unfavorite exhibits: Aquarium, Planetarium, ... The Albino alligator was alright, but I expected it to be bigger and more active (so a big letdown).

Went to Bubba Gump's for a really late lunch, but it was so delicious. Note to self: Order the Tequila Lime Pasta (aka Shrimp Shack Pasta). We were both nauseous from low blood sugar level, until we ate.

Then we went to Crawdaddy's in San Jose for dinner with the friends. Note to self: Expensive!

theory: relation between mcdonald's and baldness?

ever since living in riverside, i've eaten a lot of fast food. so over the past years, i've eaten at mcdonald's, burger king, taco bell, kfc, in-n-out, wendy's, carl's jr., del taco, etc. (what else am i missing?)

out of all of these places, i feel that mcdonald's has the most artificial taste and nutrition. believe me, i love mcdonald's. i think their double quarter pounder with cheese is so tastey, and their fries are heavenly. but, when i look around me, i notice that people who are obese and/or are balding tend to eat more junk food. and since i think that mcdonald's has the most "junk" in their food, i think there might be a relationship. people have said that baldness is a trend in genetics, but in this day and age, diet can also be a contributing factor.

this is why i'm going to ban mcdonald's from my diet from this day forward. i feel that this is a sacrifice that is worth my health and my hair. it's not too late for me.

duck, duck, goose!

so, natalie and i have been going to the duck pond in newark, trying to get rid of the bread from the sunday bbq at church. we've actually gone through an entire bag of hot dog buns, and four bags of hamburger buns, all from costco of course. anyway, there are ducks there, and then there are the geese...

these geese are ruthlessly fearless. the first sign was when the geese raided the ducks feeding. we had a ton of bread, so we just scattered it in the water, thinking nothing. the goose comes along and tries to get a bite but the ducks are too fast. goose gets frustrated and starts attacking the ducks!! ducks outnumber the goose, so goose gets out of water to go to the food source ... us! frightened, we ran along the path hoping to find a safer vantage. we eventually find one, in the corner of the pond where the milder ducks reside. get rid of bread, call it a day.

next day, we decide to take lily (natalie's parent's dog), hoping to give her some exercise. we see other dogs walking and the wildlife run away. the results are promising against the geese. we begin feeding at a populated location. ducks run, geese run, but there is another goose type even larger than day 1. it is white, with a orange beak, and red eyes. lily just wants to play. i let her lunge at the red-eyed goose hoping to scare it back into the water like the others. the red-eyed goose stands its ground, extends its neck and wings, and hisses. fear struck lily's eyes, fear struck my heart, and we both run away with our tails between our legs. passerby's laughed at us, but really they didn't understand! after being attacked by the red-eyed goose, a second wave of geese flock toward us hoping to get fed. in the panic, we just start moving, but the geese claim their first victim ... natalie's ankle. one thing learned from trying to escape, these birds just don't keep their distance, they come forward, and even up really close to you hoping to get food. sudden movements don't really scare them and you just have to use food as a decoy while you run away. scary day.

third day, we went with a friend, jeff chao. we saw a grey goose and a mallard walk/swim with 15 ducklings! they were so small and cute. i think that's the first time i actually saw a duck crossing in my life. we also saw a dead goose in the water. nasty.

The Schultz Philosophy

Got this in an email from my mom:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Have a great evening and take care of yourself!!!!!!!

The Charles Schultz Philosophy... and Now Mine!

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schultz,
the creator of the 'Peanuts' comic strip.

You don't have to actually answer the questions.

Just read the e-mail straight through, and you'll get the point.

1.  Name the five wealthiest people in the world.

2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.

3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America pageant.

4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.

5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.

6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?

The point is, none of us remembers the headliners of yesterday.

These are no second-rate achievers.

They are the best in their fields.

But the applause dies.  Awards tarnish.  Achievements are forgotten.

Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.

2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.

3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.

4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.

5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Easier?

The lesson:

The people who make a difference in your life are
not the ones with the most credentials...

the most money...  or the most awards.

They are simply the ones that care the most.

Pass this on to those people who have made a difference in your life.

' Don't worry about the world coming to an end today.
It's already tomorrow in Australia .'

(Charles Schultz)
